Lost In Florence #2

Puff

I watched the smoke disperse in the air. Rising in entropy, decreasing density. ‘Another light jab to the ozone layer.’ I chuckled at my thoughts as they lost opacity. Drawing another breath I looked down at the city from my balcony. The sun had found the horizons for its rest.

There was a crowd, all eyes on the man buskering. The children danced to his tune, some hopping out of time. Ignoring the adults standing behind, hand in hand, like couples do. The busker seemed to enjoy the sight, as he continued with his rhymes. A perfect song in a perfect sunset for a perfect mood.

Jingle

The bell above my door sang. I’d had enough of this city and its romance. I wondered about the bell and its utility until the landline rang. ‘About time’ I spat at the phone with my eyes, grumbling at the intensifying hunger pangs.

“Hello sir, this is the front desk.” (in Italian)

“Ah.. Good. Evening. My Italian.. no very. good.” (in Italian)

I muttered the little Italian I’d learnt from you.

“Ah, apologies sir, we can proceed in English if you’d like” (in English) “That would be ideal, thank you.” I replied, thankful for the discerning attendant. “I’m calling with regards to your dinner plans sir” “Oh, alright, what plans do you have?” “Well, you could either come to dine in our state-of-the-art diner, or we could have your dinner brought up to you.”

I frowned at the thought of having dinner surrounded by natives. Social interactions were never my forte. My room, dimly lit by the sunset was the perfect escape.

“I’ll have it brought up thank you, all future meals as well.” “Alright sir, what would you be having?” “Surprise me, I hear Italy is the home of pasta.” He chuckled; I guess those socializing classes really worked

“Definitely sir, we assure you’d be pleased with our selection.” The call ended.

Zip

I hummed as I unpacked, brimming with gladness. Each movie-like scene heightening my expectations. Like a dream you couldn’t hold, but enjoyed regardless. I was finally here, Florence, for you.
